Black Friday Not The True Meaning of Christmas
By Andi Hoy, McKenna Kutsop, Jen Gonzalez, Carolyn Lanza and Desiree Burkat of Berkeley Heights, New Jersey
11/26/2009

Dear Editor,

"It’s the most wonderful time of the year." This quote, taken from a well known Christmas carol, is supposed to represent the grand time Christmas brings to people around the world. Spending time with family, cooking big meals, decorating the tree, and finally, buying presents are all classic traditions of the Christmas season. However, throughout the years, families have forgotten the true meaning of Christmas. This joyous holiday has become about buying the most extravagant gifts. In fact, people have become so obsessed with saving money on these gifts as to wake up extremely early the day after Thanksgiving, Black Friday, and get presents for the lowest price possible.

Black Friday is known for its outrageously low sale prices which cause the public to take the whole experience to an extreme. For example, last year the unfortunate death of a Walmart employee occurred due to the overly aggressive customers on Black Friday. Everyone likes to buy and give gifts for Christmas, but it’s unacceptable for people’s lives to be at risk just to get the best deal on a toy that will eventually be thrown away. Christmas should really be about celebrating with family and friends instead of emphasizing gift buying.

Andi Hoy, McKenna Kutsop, Jen Gonzalez, Carolyn Lanza are in the 10th Grade at Governor Livingston High School. Desiree Burkat is in the 11th Grade.

Stefania De Mayo was very lucky to get a Heart transplant. Over 50% of Americans on the national waiting list will die before they get a transplant. Most of these deaths are needless. Americans bury or cremate 20,000 transplantable organs every year.....

Regarding the "Temporary Fence" on Summit Avenue--Make it "Permanent"
By Robert Nowaczyk of Summit, New Jersey

It seems to me that we’d be wasting $145,000 of the public’s money erecting another fence. This fence serves it purpose...protecting the lives of residents.

No matter what kind of fence would be used, it won’t look perfect in that spot. So, let’s ....

The "R" Word Hurts
By Alison Lozano, Ph. D. of Trenton, New Jersey

There is increased national attention on the use of the `R’ word because of an unfortunate statement by a senior White House official. Putting aside the political rhetoric it has generated, the fact remains that the R word hurts.

When the words "re....
