Think Positive Helmet Reward Program Awards Local Boy with New Bike
By Children’s Specialized Hospital
12/23/2009

Tom Scanio, of Kenilworth found out that wearing a bike helmet not only prevented head injury but got him a new bike! Tom is the raffle winner at the end of "Think Positive Helmet Reward Program 2009" which took place from May through October in the Union County towns of Cranford, Elizabeth, Hillside, Kenilworth, Linden, Mountainside, New Providence, Plainfield, Roselle, Roselle Park, Union and Westfield.

Think Positive traffic safety officers joined with Safe Kids Union County at Children’s Specialized Hospital, the Brain Injury Association of N.J., and local merchants to reward kids in Union County wearing a helmet when riding a bike. Kids without helmets received information from the officers and helmets if deemed needy. Many children seen wearing a helmet were given a "summons" by the officers for a reward from town merchants. The participating merchants received certificates of appreciation to display in their establishments. The bicycle for the winner of the raffle was graciously donated by Renewal for Anderson of Central New Jersey, located in Cranford.

Helmet use when biking reduces the risk of head injury by 85% and severe brain injury by 88%. It’s estimated that 75% of fatal head injuries among child bicyclists could have been prevented with a bike helmet! Kids living with brain injury and their families often face a multitude of problems in many areas of daily living.

Helmet use falls off as kids get older, yet older kids bike farther from home and increase their risks of severe accidents. Children’s Specialized Hospital and Safe Kids calls on all parents to remind kids they cannot afford to have them risk brain injury. It is the law in New Jersey!9 Ride a bike, wear a helmet. Give a bike, give a helmet. Please join our efforts to kids safe. For more information, contact Susan Driscoll, Safe Kids Coordinator, at sdriscoll@childrens-specialized.org
