The College Report: Madison’s Ashley Evans Scores Big in Pool for Arizona State
By John Manley
12/8/2009

Arizona State’s Ashley Evans (Madison, Sr.) swam to victory in the ‘A’ final of the 200-yard individual medley at the Tiger Invitational at the University of Missouri last weekend. Evans, a Madison High grad, completed her laps in 2:00.62; her nearest competitor finished in 2:02.12. She also took second place in the ‘A’ final medley at 400 yards, with a time of 4:24.13, bettered only by her teammate’s 4:20.42. Evans also won the ‘B’ final in the 50-yard freestyle with a time of 23.53, which would have been good for fifth place in the ‘A’ final. She also came in third in the ‘A’ final of the 100-yard freestyle, which she swam in 50.87 against a winning 50.06. The Sun Devils finished second in the team scoring to the host school.

Penn’s Stephanie Nerby (Summit, Sr.) cleaned up at the Nike Invitational in Gambier, Ohio last week. The Summit High grad won three individual events, starting with the 1,650-yard freestyle, which she completed in 16:57.20. Also scoring for Penn in that event were Genevieve Fleming (Short Hills, Jr.) and Rebecca James (Short Hills, Soph.), who were 13th (17:50.36) and 16th (18:14.63), respectively. Nerby later won the freestyle at 500 yards, getting through the water in 4:56.90. Fleming won the consolation final with a 5:02.65 clocking that would have been good for fourth place in Nerby’s bracket. Nerby next won the 200-yard backstroke, finishing in 2:05.07. James, swimming in the consolation round, finished 15th overall in 2:13.69. Nerby just missed another victory, getting nipped in the 200-yard freestyle and having to settle for second place. Her 1:52.07 was bettered by Davidson’s L. Martin, who got to the wall in 1:52.05. Fleming finished fifth in the consolation final (13th overall) in 1:54.71. Nerby also finished seventh in the championship final of the 200-yard butterfly. She finished in 2:09.50 against a winning 2:03.91. Penn’s women won the team championship.

On the men’s side, Penn freshmen Christopher Delafuente (Westfield, Fr.) and Christopher Fleming (Short Hills, Fr.) also got their feet wet. Fleming swam three freestyles, getting sixth of 36 at 500 yards (4:36.15 against the winner’s 4:27.78), eighth of 19 in the freestyle at 1,650 yards (16:07.95 against the winner’s 15:30.24), and 10th of 24 at 200 yards (1:42.49 against a winning 1:39.16). Delafuente was 19th of 24 in the 200-yard butterfly (his 1:56.06 against a winning 1:50.82) and 18th of 24 in the 400-yard individual medley (4:12.24 against the winner’s 3:57.45). Penn’s men finished second behind Kenyon College.

Binghamton’s Jason Chen (Livingston, Jr.) won two events in a dual meet against Cornell on Saturday. He was first to finish in the 200-yard freestyle, with a winning time of 1:44.68, and in the 100-yard butterfly, clocked in 51.99. Cornell won the meet, 163-128.

The Holy Cross men’s and women’s swimming teams contested the Harold Anderson Invitational at the University of Rhode Island last Friday and Saturday, with a trio of locals diving into the pool. Sean Hager (Westfield, Jr.) contested three events, with his best showing a fourth-place finish in the 400-yard individual medley, which he swam in 4:37.86 against a winning 4:15.67. Hager, a Pingry grad, also took eighth place among 18 starters in the 200-yard individual medley (2:07.90 against a winning 2:00.88) and he was ninth of 12 in the 200-yard butterfly, which he swam in 2:12.68 against the winner’s 1:57.97. Joe McShane (Chatham, Sr.) also participated in three events for the Cross, showing best in the 50-yard freestyle, which he completed in 23:21 for 12th place in the 33-man field. The winner needed 21:90. McShane, a Chatham High product, also was 14th of 32 to finish in the 100-yard freestyle (51.55 against a winning 47.69), and was 17th of 34 to finish in the 200-yard freestyle (1:54.42 against the winner’s 1:45.15). Maggie Beaudouin (Madison, Soph.) took turns in two individual events for the Crusaders. She finished eighth of 13 starters in the 1,650-yard freestyle, with a time of 11:25.90 against the winner’s 10:41.62. Beaudouin, who prepped at the Academy of St. Elizabeth, also finished 19th among 31 starters in the 500-yard freestyle, which she completed in 5:36.37 against a winning 5:09.46.

Alexis Kalevich (New Providence, Sr.) and Victoria Kalevich (New Providence, Sr.) both posted third-place finishes for Northeastern University in a dual meet with the University of Massachusetts on Saturday. Alexis was third in the 100-yard breaststroke with a time of 1:09.32 against a winning 1:08.76, while Victoria finished similarly in both the 100- and 200-yard butterfly. Her time in the longer event was 2:14.37 against the winner’s 2:09.18. At 100 yards, she was clocked in 1:01.47, while the winner needed 58.93. Alexis also came in fifth in the breaststroke at 200 yards, finishing in 2:31.71, while the victor was done in 2:27.12. Northeastern defeated UMass, 174-123.

VOLLEYBALL

Marika Racibarskas (Chatham, Fr.) played in one set in each of Penn State’s two victories to open the Nittany Lions’ defense of their national championship. Racibarskas, out of Chatham High, recorded a service ace in each of Penn State’s 3-0 victories over Binghamton (25-9, 25-13, 25-14) and the University of Pennsylvania (25-20, 25-17, 25-16). Penn State, undefeated in 34 matches this season, next takes on the University of Florida in Gainesville, Florida on Friday at 6 pm.
