Binghamton’s Jason Chen (Livingston, Jr.) won three swimming events in a recent dual meet with Marist. The product of Livingston High took the 100-yard breaststroke (with a winning time of 1:01.99), the 100-yard freestyle (48.08) and the 100-yard butterfly (52.18). He also swam a leg on the Bearcats’ winning spin in the 200 medley relay.
Rowan’s Julianne Furdyna (Livingston, Jr.) won the freestyle at three different distances in a recent dual meet with Ramapo College. Furdyna, who prepped at Livingston High, was first to finish at 1,000 yards, in which she stopped the teletimer in 11:19.65, at 500 yards (won in 5:32.95) and at 200 yards (2:06.40). Only in the latter event did she receive a stiff challenge. Rowan dusted Ramapo, 155-93.
Archrivals Lafayette and Lehigh took to the pool recently for bragging rights, with the Lehigh men prevailing, 214-84, and the Lehigh women doing similarly, 194-104. Patricia Barletta (New Providence, Soph.) won the 200-yard butterfly, which she completed in 2:11.06. The New Providence High grad also swam the anchor leg for Lehigh’s ‘A’ team in the 400-yard medley relay, which they won, and was second in the 200-yard freestyle. Her time of 1:56.84 wasn’t quite good enough for the winning 1:56.23. Lisa Rauch (Westfield, Sr.) swam the initial leg for Lehigh’s ‘B’ team in the 200-yard freestyle relay, in which they finished second to their ‘A’ squad. Lafayette’s Stephen Rubino (Berkeley Heights, Sr.) played a part in scoring points for the Leopards. The Gov. Livingston High grad was second in both the 200-yard butterfly, which he swam in 1:57.63 against a winning 1:56.36, and the 100-yard butterfly (52.03 against a winning 51.80). He also swam fourth in the 400-yard individual medley, with a time of 4:31.21 against the winner’s 4:15.99.
MEN’S BASKETBALL
Wellington Smith (Summit, Sr.) led or co-led West Virginia in three statistical categories as the eighth-ranked Mountaineers won the championship game of the 76 Classic over Portland, 84-66, in Anaheim, California on Sunday. Smith, a 6-7 forward out of Summit High, led his side in rebounds (7) and blocked shots (2) and was co-high in assists (3). He chipped in seven points, canning one of two bombs and three of four free throws.
Pat Sullivan (Madison, Soph.) led all scorers with 23 points as Hamilton (2-1) lost to Wells College, 70-60, in Aurora, N.Y. on Saturday. The 6-7 center out of Delbarton shot 8-for-15 from the field (1-for-3 from downtown) and 6-for-7 from the foul line. He also grabbed five rebounds and blocked one shot.
Montclair State’s Tom Bonard (Westfield, Jr.) hit double figures in points scored with 10 as the Red Hawks (3-2) lost to Case Western Reserve on Sunday in the consolation game of the Allegheny Holiday Tournament in Meadville, Pennsylvania. The Westfield High grad came off the bench to hit four of eight field goal attempts, including two of five from outside the 3-point arc. In Montclair’s opening-round loss to Allegheny, 95-68, Bonard started and scored five points in 16 minutes.
Jason Banzhaf (Livingston, Jr.) was high scorer for Catholic University in the Cardinals’ 70-37 victory over Haverford. The Seton Hall Prep alum clicked on six of 10 shots from the field and two of five from the free-throw line. He also had six rebounds in 22 minutes of action. Catholic improved to 3-2 with the win.
Connecticut College’s Chris Kehoe (Summit, Soph.) scored six points on 2-for-3 shooting from the floor and 2-for-2 from the foul line as the Camels (1-3) lost to undefeated Roger Williams, 76-59, in Bristol, R.I. last Tuesday. The Summit High product also earned credit for four rebounds and two assists.
Rutgers-Newark (3-1) eased past CCNY, 72-47, in New York last Tuesday with James Johnson (Summit, Sr.) contributing six points. The Summit High grad flicked in three of seven field goal attempts and had three steals during his 23 minutes of action.
MEN’S SQUASH
Dartmouth is off to a 3-0 start with Brian O’Toole (Short Hills, Soph.) manning the no. 6 position. The Pingry grad has recorded victories thus far over George Washington’s Brett Feldman, 11-5, 11-6, 11-1, Navy’s Billy Abrams, 9-11, 11-7, 11-5, 10-12, 11-8, and Franklin & Marshall’s Pat Cunningham, 11-8, 11-4, 11-5.
WOMEN’S SQUASH
Yale’s Alexandra Kerr (Short Hills, Soph.) began the season with a victory at the eighth spot in the Bulldogs’ 8-1 win over Williams recently. The Pingry grad took the measure of Eliana Saltzman, 11-3, 11-4, 11-2.
MEN’S ICE HOCKEY
Colby’s Matt Rappaport (Livingston, Soph.) earned his first point of the season on an assist as the Mules (2-2-0) defeated Salve Regina, 5-1, in Brunswick, Maine on Sunday.
