Two months from now, New Jersey’s only statewide environmental education conference sets up shop here just a few short miles from Princeton University. Conducted by the Alliance for New Jersey Environmental Education (ANJEE), the milestone event takes place January 28 - 30, 2010 at the Wyndham Princeton Forrestal Hotel and Conference Center in Plainsboro, NJ. Beginning with preconference workshops on Thursday, January 28, the conference continues with plenary sessions and concurrent workshops over Friday and Saturday.
"Everyone including classroom teachers, nonformal educators, administrators, government agency specialists, green business owners, environmental advocates, students and members of the general public are invited to participate," explained Conference vice-chair Hugh Carola. "This is most definitely not an "experts only" event.
Soon to celebrate twenty-five years of promoting environmental education in New Jersey, ANJEE is proud to offer a first rate conference that facilitates networking, builds presentation skills and provides timely professional development opportunities for formal and nonformal educators alike. Over fifty workshops covering a wide range of topics are scheduled; and more than forty educational displays staffed by vendors, publishers and program providers will also be on hand. Increasing attention is being paid by educators and environmental experts to the benefits of non-structured outdoor play and the merits of environmentally-responsible school practices and instruction. To that end, it was "only natural" for ANJEE to assemble expertise, demonstrations, instruction and resources that focus on those important and timely topics. Throughout the event, presenters and exhibitors will offer a wealth of practical insights and techniques replicable in a variety of educational settings.
One highlight of the Conference’s will be the Saturday plenary session, Ecology of Hope, presented by Cheryl Charles. Ms. Charles is President and co-founder of the Children & Nature Network – a non-profit organization dedicated to building a movement to re-connect children and nature. She will speak about the growing disconnect between children and nature, the indicators of what author Richard Louv in his groundbreaking book Last Child In The Woods calls "nature-deficit disorder," and the scientific as well as common-sense evidence of the benefits to children from direct experience with nature on a daily basis in their lives.

In addition to workshops and plenary sessions, the Conference will also feature ANJEE’s Annual Awards Reception during which several outstanding environmental educators will be recognized by their peers for contributions to the people and the environment of New Jersey. The reception will be held at the Wyndham on Friday evening, January 29. "It is our hope that many people from across New Jersey will attend this exciting array of professional development and networking opportunities – and help us celebrate the advance of environmental education in New Jersey over the past twenty-five years," said Conference chair Diane Hewlett-Lowrie. "It’s the perfect place enhance your skills, discover new resources, and network with peers to share ideas that will inspire future efforts to educate New Jersey’s people about our environment."
