Saint Barnabas Medical Center Launches Groundbreaking Multi-disciplinary Breast Cancer Program in Bedminster, December 9th

Saint Barnabas Medical Center is launching a multi-disciplinary breast cancer program in Bedminster starting December 9, 2009. Women will now have the convenience of being able to meet with the breast surgeon, radiation oncologist and medical oncologist all at the same time, on the same day and in the same location. This groundbreaking approach allows a woman the convenience of being part of a multi-disciplinary conference to discuss the best treatment approach for their individual cancer. The physicians who are involved on this team include M. Michele Blackwood, M.D., Breast Surgeon; Raquel Wagman, M.D., Radiation Oncologist; and Delia Radovich, M.D., Medical Oncologist. This program is designed for individuals who have been: Recently diagnosed with breast cancer Under evaluation for suspicion of breast cancer Interested in obtaining a second opinion.

This program facilitates direct communication between the physicians and the patients with a purpose of not only providing a highly personalized evaluation and multi-disciplinary treatment plan but offering education and support. "We are very fortunate to have Saint Barnabas’s Breast and Women’s Imaging Center in the community. This program is the natural next step in further developing the services available for women in Bedminster and surrounding communities. This practice is about addressing the needs of our community in a manner that is efficient and convenient for them," states Dr. Blackwood, Director of Breast Health and Disease Management at Saint Barnabas Medical Center.

M. Michele Blackwood, M.D., FACS

Dr. Blackwood earned her national reputation as an expert breast surgeon through her professional career, faculty positions, publications, and media appearances. Dr. Blackwood, board certified in Surgery, received her medical degree from the Medical University of South Carolina, completed her internship and residency at The Stamford Hospital, and followed with a fellowship with the Breast Service from Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center, N.Y. She is a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons and is certified by the American Board of Surgery.

In addition, her various academic appointments include Clinical Instructor, New York Medical College, and Assistant Clinical Professor, Department of Surgery, Columbia University. Dr. Blackwood is also on the medical Advisory Board of the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation, and has appeared on Fox Five Television, "60 Minutes," CBS News, Good Day New York, and CBS’s Early Show, among others.

Delia Radovich, M.D.

Dr. Radovich received her bachelor’s degree from New York University and completed post-baccalaureate studies at Columbia University. She received her medical degree from Brown University School of Medicine and completed internship and residency at Yale New-Haven Hospital. Following her internal medicine training, she completed a combined Hematology and Oncology fellowship at Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center, where she participated in clinical research and poster presentations at national meetings.

She also has published a surgical text chapter and several scientific abstracts. She joined The Cancer Center of Saint Barnabas in 2004, and is an Assistant Attending at the Medical Center, with special interests in breast oncology and gastro-intestinal cancers. She has received a recognition award from the Department of Medicine for the education of medical residents. Dr. Radovich is board certified in Internal Medicine and Medical Oncology, and is a member of the American Society of Clinical Oncology and the American College of Physicians.

Raquel T. Wagman, M.D.

Dr. Wagman joined the Department of Radiation Oncology at Saint Barnabas Medical Center in July 2004. She came to Saint Barnabas from Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center where she completed her residency in radiation oncology and worked in the Department of Radiation Oncology for four years.

Prior to that, she completed her internship and received both her medical and undergraduate degrees from the University of Michigan. She is the author of more than 30 publications, abstracts, conference proceedings and book chapters and review articles. Over the past several years, Dr. Wagman has made four oral presentations and one poster presentation at the American Society of Therapeutic Radiology and Oncology (ASTRO) Annual Meeting. She takes a special interest in the treatment and research of breast cancer and gastrointestinal cancers. Dr. Wagman is board certified in Radiation Oncology. She has received numerous awards, including the Radiological Society of North America’s Resident/Fellow Research Award.
