The Folk Project Presents Chorus Song Night at The Minstrel
By The Folk Project
11/24/2009

In the tradition of Pete Seeger, Tom Paxton and the giants of the folk revival, the Folk Project will present Chorus Song Night at The Minstrel on Friday, December 4 at 8:00 pm at the Morristown Unitarian Fellowship, 21 Normandy Heights Road, Morristown. The evening will be packed with songs with choruses, refrains, harmonies and the joy of singing together. Leading the audience will be veteran performers Phil Shapiro and Carrie Shore from Ithaca, NY, rising star Jean Rohe, and local favorite Mike Agranoff.

The performance is part of The Minstrel Acoustic Concert Series, sponsored each Friday evening at the Fellowship. Admission is $7.00 at the door. For further information, call 973-335-9489, or visit www.folkproject.org

Chorus Song Night is a tradition at The Minstrel, beginning in 1993. Most concert venues feature performers onstage and a quiet, attentive, but passive audience. Not so Chorus Song Night! The audience is part of the performance, singing full-throated, uninhibited and with gusto. Safe in the darkness, surrounded by other enthusiastic singers, the shyest person can enjoy the magic of song and singing. The song leaders are all experienced performers. Folksinger/guitarist Phil Shapiro and fiddler/singer Carrie Shore choose songs from two hundred years of American traditional folk song, mixed with newer songs written in the folk tradition. Phil is best known as host of WVBR’s Bound for Glory radio show, North America’s longest-running live folk music broadcast, and now also a webcast. Jean Rohe began singing in the Rohe Family Band at age 5. Now a soloist in her early 20s, she has expanded musically into jazz and South American music, retaining her early roots in folk music. Mike Agranoff has been part of Chorus Song Night since 1993. Program chairman of The Minstrel, engineer by day and folksinger by night, recording artist, and nationally recognized performer, he brings a vast repertoire of songs to the stage. All leaders will be onstage throughout the evening, joining in each other’s songs. They will be presenting songs in a round robin format.

Chorus Song Night is one of more than 100 performances sponsored by The Folk Project throughout the year. The Minstrel is at the Morristown Unitarian Fellowship each Friday night, with dances, festivals, house concerts, music workshops and storytelling events at other venues. Go to www.folkproject.org for more information.

The Folk Project is a non-profit 501C Corporation whose mission is to present high caliber folk music performances, dances and instructional workshops for the public and members; to encourage development of musicianship, performance, storytelling and dance skills in the Northern New Jersey area; and to provide interesting social and learning activities relating to traditional and participatory folk music and dance.

Funding for this project has been made possible in part by funds from the Arts Council of the Morris Area through the New Jersey State Council on the Arts/Department of State, a Partner Agency of the National Endowment for the Arts.
