North Plainfield Man Sentenced For Arson and Insurance Fraud Related to Vehicle Fire
By Office of the Essex County Prosecutor
11/13/2009

Essex County Prosecutor Paula T. Dow today announced that a Vailsburg Middle School guidance counselor was sentenced in court this morning for having his vehicle and his friend’s vehicle destroyed by fire in order to collect insurance proceeds.

Dr. Kenyetta O’Bryant, 38, of North Plainfield, admitted his guilt on September 29, 2009 before Essex County Superior Court Judge Torkwase Sekou to two separate indictments. O’Bryant pleaded guilty to 3rd degree arson and 3rd degree insurance fraud for torching his vehicle in April, 2006 in order to collect insurance proceeds. He also pleaded guilty to 3rd degree arson and 3rd degree insurance fraud for having his friend’s vehicle set on fire, only six days later, for the same reason. In keeping with the plea agreement, O’Bryant has been sentenced to serve 364 days in the county jail, forfeit his job, and will be forever banned from public employment.

According to Essex County Assistant Prosecutor Michael Morris, who prosecuted the case, on April 13, 2006, at approximately 2:45 a.m. Essex County Sheriff’s Officers responded to a fire in Weequahic Park in Newark. Sheriff Officers discovered a 2002 BMW 525I ablaze in the park. A private engineering firm hired by Geico Insurance Company ultimately determined the fire to be arson. O’Bryant had reported his vehicle stolen from Elizabeth that same day. Detectives from the Essex County Arson Task Force developed information, as part of their investigation, linking O’Bryant to the crime.

Six days later, on April 19, 2006, O’Bryant concocted a scheme with Terrance Wilkins to destroy a 2004 Acura TL. With only six payments remaining on his three-year lease and facing high mileage penalties, Wilkins along with O’Bryant had his vehicle torched. Newark Fire Department found the vehicle ablaze inside the Barringer High School parking lot in Newark shortly before midnight on April 19. Wilkins had reported the vehicle stolen from Neptune on April 20. Detectives from the Essex County Arson Task Force/Vehicle Fire Initiative determined the cause of the fire to be arson. Clarendon Insurance Company of Saddle Brook denied the insurance claim. On April 28, 2008, O’Bryant and Wilkins were indicted on similar charges.

Wilkins had previously agreed to cooperate with authorities and also testified in court against O’Bryant. In return, Wilkins was entered into a Pre-Trial Intervention (PTI) program.

Prosecutor Dow commended Lead Detective Marlin Bullock of the Essex County Prosecutor’s Arson Task Force/Vehicle Fire Initiative with the investigation.
