The College Report: Booters Lachman and Martin Establish School Records
By John Manley
11/8/2009

Johns Hopkins placekicker Alex Lachman (Livingston, Jr.) set a school record for points at his position with 16 in yesterday’s 51-13 win over Franklin & Marshall in Baltimore. Lachman, out of Livingston High, nailed all three field goal attempts for a total of nine points and added seven more by successfully converting each of his extra-point attempts. The previous school record for a placekicker was 15 points. His field goals came from 35, 38 and 28 yards out. Aiding the Hopkins cause at left tackle was Mike Stoffel (Livingston, Sr.); the line cleared the way for the Blue Jays to gain 287 yards on the ground, while allowing quarterback Hewitt Tomlin time to complete 12 of 17 pass attempts without getting sacked. Carrying much of the load on defense for Franklin & Marshall was James Freeman (Millburn, Jr.). The Millburn High alum had a hand in seven tackles (third highest on the team), two of which were solo numbers and one of which resulted in a loss of yardage for Hopkins. Both sides are now 7-2; Hopkins is 6-1 in Centennial Conference action, while the Diplomats are 5-2 in league play.

Matt Martin (Summit, Soph.) established a Kenyon College record with a 74-yard punt in the Lords’ 31-27 loss to Denison yesterday at home in Gambier, Ohio. Martin, a Morristown-Beard product, averaged 46.2 yards on five punts and twice stuck Denison inside their 20 yard line. Kenyon dropped to 3-7 overall and 3-4 in the North Coast Athletic Conference.

Joe Gilfedder (Berkeley Heights, Soph.) contributed nine tackles as Ithaca upset previously undefeated Alfred, 31-10, at home yesterday. Gilfedder, a linebacker out of Gov. Livingston High, made three of those stops on his own, with two for loss of yardage. Ithaca is now 6-3 overall and 3-2 in the Empire 8.

Kean improved to 8-1 overall and 8-0 against New Jersey Athletic Conference foes with a 20-0 win over William Paterson in Wayne yesterday. Shabazz Green (Summit, Sr.) lined up at left guard on offense for Kean and contributed to the 257 net yards they gained on the ground. The line also kept quarterback Tom D’Ambrisi from getting sacked. Green, a Summit High graduate, also earned recognition this past week as an ESPN the Magazine Academic All-District second team honoree. Green is a theater teacher certification major and a member of Kean’s chapter of Chi Alpha Sigma, the National College Athlete Honor Society.

Tom Fischer (Livingston, Soph.) completed 15 of 25 passes, including a 65-yard completion to A.J. Letizia for a touchdown, to lead Montclair State past Rowan, 14-7, in Glassboro yesterday. The strike came on the first play of the drive midway through the second quarter. Fischer’s arm helped the Red Hawks gain 188 yards through the air. Montclair, now 8-1 overall and 8-0 in the NJAC, next faces Kean at 1 pm at Sprague Field in Montclair for the conference title and an automatic bid to the NCAA Division 3 tournament.

After reaching the midpoint of his senior season without a touchdown, Lafayette’s Jeff Cumming (New Providence, Sr.) has turned into quite the offensive threat for the No. 24 Leopards. The fullback out of New Providence High caught just one pass in yesterday’s 56-49 win over No. 20 Colgate in Easton, Pennsylvania, but he scampered 50 yards for a crucial touchdown, his fourth in the last four games. He had no carries out of the backfield. Lafayette is now 8-1 overall and 4-0 in the Patriot League.

Tyler George (Berkeley Heights, Soph.) caught five passes for 55 yards in Monmouth’s 24-10 victory over St. Francis in Loretto, Pennsylvania yesterday. The tight end out of Gov. Livingston High had a long gain of 17 yards for the 5-4 Hawks, who are now 4-2 in Northeast Conference play.

Taylor Robinson (Summit, Sr.) had seven tackles for Middlebury in the Panthers’ 37-14 home win over Hamilton yesterday. The Summit High grad got the job done at defensive end on five of those drops; five of his tackles, including one sack, were behind the line of scrimmage and resulted in a loss of 17 yards to Hamilton. Joining Robinson on defense for Middlebury (4-3) were linebackers Steve Hardin (Summit, Sr.), a Delbarton grad, who was involved in six tackles, three of which were solo jobs, and Paul Carroll (New Providence, Jr.), a New Providence High product, who earned credit for two assisted tackles.

Zach McGehee (Livingston, Fr.) kicked off for Coastal Carolina six times in the Chanticleers’ 26-21 victory over Gardner-Webb in Conway, South Carolina yesterday and sent the ball an average of 60.7 yards per kick. Two of his boots resulted in touchbacks. The Livingston High product and his Coastal teammates improved to 4-5.

Bill Prendeville (Chatham, Fr.) averaged 50 yards a blast on two kickoffs for Bucknell in their 21-7 loss to Fordham at Jack Coffey Field in the Bronx yesterday. The Seton Hall Prep grad and the Bison dropped to 3-6 with the defeat.

Kevin Allgood (Chatham, Soph.) was in on six tackles as The College of New Jersey dropped a 37-34 verdict to Western Connecticut State in Ewing yesterday. Allgood, a defensive end out of Chatham High, made two of those tackles without help and brought one ball carrier down behind the line of scrimmage. TCNJ is now 4-5 overall and 3-5 in the NJAC.

Matt Ruark (Summit, Soph.) carried the ball three times for a total gain of 10 yards in Dickinson’s 42-14 thrashing of Juniata in Carlisle, Pennsylvania on Friday evening. The Summit High grad had a long carry of four yards. The Red Devils are 8-1 with the victory.

CROSS COUNTRY

Florida Tech’s Stephanie Fonseca (New Providence, Soph.) took 37th place in the NCAA Division 2 Women’s Southeast Regional in Dover, Florida yesterday. The New Providence High grad ran 5,000 meters in 25:03. Teammate Sara Trane ran a winning 21:37.

Tufts’ Dan Kirschner (Short Hills, Fr.) had the best showing of a trio of area runners who contested yesterday’s ECAC Division 3 Men’s Championships in Williamstown, Massachusetts. Kirschner, a Millburn High grad, finished 36th in the 296-man field; he clocked in at 27:53.7 for 8,000 meters. Drew’s Steve Monteleone (Berkeley Heights, Soph.) finished 68th in 28:32.9, while Wesleyan’s Julian Applebaum (Westfield, Fr.) came in 137th at the 29:50.2 mark. Top honors went to Greg Redfield of Johnson & Wales, who ran 26:11.2 for the victory.
