Standing Room Only At Literacy Magazine Celebration
By Literacy Volunteers
10/31/2009

Literacy Volunteers of Union County recently celebrated the publication of the first edition of a Student Art and Literary Magazine. This Education program was made possible in part by a HEART (History, Education, Arts Reaching Thousands) Grant from the Union County Board of Chosen Freeholders.

Students were asked to submit their stories, poems, photographs and artwork to be considered for inclusion in the magazine. Submissions were carefully reviewed and evaluated by a committee of volunteer tutors before selecting the work of thirty-two students.

An audience of over 100 people attended the event at the Plainfield Public Library. Several students whose work was published in the magazine read their sample writings and spoke about their artwork. There were both tears and laughter as the adult learners shared their stories and inspired the audience throughout the evening. Many adult learners expressed gratitude to their individual tutors.

Literacy Volunteers is a non-profit, volunteer driven organization that improves the lives of adults by teaching them to read, write and speak English so they can participate more fully in family, workplace and community life. Tutors meet with their students one hour a week at public libraries throughout Union County. You do not need any teaching experience and it is not necessary to know a foreign language to become a volunteer.

Through the program, adult learners have been able to obtain a driver’s license, earn a high school equivalency diploma, and increase their ability to get better jobs and be more productive workers. Other adult learners are giving back to the community by facilitating a support group, teaching computer skills at a local library to bi-lingual learners and conducting conversation groups to enable students to become more comfortable in speaking and writing English.

Literacy Volunteers recently launched a new website, www.lvaunion.org. Visit the website to read examples of student writings under the "Student" heading. Click "News and Events" to read more about the Student Art and Literary Magazine. Go to "Become Involved" for information on the various ways you can make a difference by volunteering today or call Susan at 908-755-7998.

Eloisa meets regularly with Mary Schnorr (not photographed), also a Westfield resident. Mary is a Literacy tutor who is inspired by Eloisa’s dedication and hard work.
