New Vote-By-Mail Process a Success in Governor’s Election
By Constitutional Officers Association of New Jersey
10/30/2009

The Honorable Brett Radi, the Somerset County Clerk and Section Chief of the Clerk’s Section of the Constitutional Officers Association of New Jersey (COANJ) announced: "Statewide over 170,000 voters are voting at home under the new mail-in ballot law. Our collective efforts have made this transition smooth and successful for voters."

Registered voters were able to apply for a Vote-by-Mail ballot by completing an application and returning it to the County Clerk’s Office up to seven days prior to the November 3 election.

"Tuesday, October 27th was the last day to apply through the mail for a Vote-by-Mail ballot for the upcoming General Election," said Union County Clerk Joanne Rajoppi. "Voters may still apply in person at the County Clerk’s Office, located at 2 Broad Street, Room 113, Elizabeth, until 3:00 p.m., Monday, November 2nd, the day before the election, for a mail-in ballot. My office also will be open until 8:00 p.m. Friday, Oct. 30th, and on Saturday, Oct. 31, from 9:00 a.m. until 1:00 p.m."

"In Union County over 9,000 voters have utilized this new process," Rajoppi said. "That’s an increase of more than 75 percent over the number of absentee voters in Union County for the previous gubernatorial election in 2005."

The new Vote-by-Mail system replaces the old absentee voting process. Previously, the absentee ballot process was limited to voters who were unable to get to the polls on Election Day due to sickness, away on business or serving overseas in the military. Under the new Vote-by Mail process, any registered voter can vote by mail by simply requesting a ballot – no reason or excuse is required.

Election Day is Tuesday, November 3rd and polling places in New Jersey will be open from 6:00 a.m. through 8:00 p.m.
