Boys and Girls Clubs of New Jersey Concert for Kids, A Hit with Adults; Smokey Robinson Stars at Fundraising Benefit
By Lauren E. Colao
10/30/2009

NEWARK, NJ - The season for giving has arrived, and the seventh annual Concert for Kids to benefit the Boys and Girls Clubs in New Jersey was held Wednesday evening, October 28 at the New Jersey Performing Arts Center (NJPAC). The event started in Newark at 7:30 PM with a short program featuring aspiring talent and success stories of the Boys and Girls Club members.

New Jersey native, and former Saturday Night Live cast member, Joe Piscopo was the Master of Ceremonies. Mr. Piscopo has become a staple of the annual event and offered plenty of his humor in a warm and welcoming way.

After the impressive youth performances by Najee Brieyanna Wilson and Haley Alexa Grimes, Smokey Robinson, an alumnus of the Boys and Girls Club himself, delighted the audience. His delivery was on point and as smooth as ever. He sang some classics like Ooo Baby Baby, which received one of three standing ovations, and Tracks of My Tears. He also sang songs from the Temptations, Frank Sinatra and even Nora Jones.

Robinson was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1987, and is still creating original music. His songs instantly bring adults back to another era, yet his voice is timeless and unique. His latest album, Time Flies When You’re Having Fun, features artists such as Joss Stone, India.Arie and Carlos Santana, which entices a new generation of listeners. Robinson is on Facebook and Twitter, and actively engages with his fans.

Talented and caring as well, he personally went to the Newark Boys and Girls Club the day before the concert. The video can be seen at http://videos.nj.com/star-ledger/2009/10/smokey_robinson_makes_a_specia.html.

Lou Leonardis, creative director at Enzo Creative in Summit, attended the concert. The Alternative Press held a random drawing on its online newspaper site for which Leonardis won tickets. "It was unbelievable to see a musical legend like Smokey Robinson. He truly connects with the audience, even talking directly to young attendees. It is especially interesting to know he collaborates with young artists and is active in the online community," said Leonardis. "I would not be here to see Smokey perform if it weren’t for The Alternative Press and the Boys and Girls Clubs in NJ. My wife and I really enjoyed the entire event."

Proceeds from the concert are to support the Boys and Girls Clubs in New Jersey, specifically the Fund-A-Dream program. This program fosters the talents and interests of the Boys and Girls Club members. The 25 local clubs in New Jersey will benefit from the earnings, and they will provide the encouragement and financial assistance to members in attempts to fulfill their dreams. The children’s stories can be read on the www.bgcnj.org website.
