SUMMIT, NJ – Summit stepped back in time on Sunday October 4th, with its 13th Annual Antique and Classic Car Show. MG’s, Mercedes, Model A’s, Mustangs and more revved their engines and laid on their horns while thousands of spectators ogled at the vintage treasures on wheels lining Beechwood Road and Union Place. Pedestrians mingled on those roads, which were barricaded at Springfield Avenue, Summit Avenue and Maple Street. This allowed the cars to be showcased and admired up close or from the nearby restaurants where patrons were able to gaze while dining alfresco in 70+ degree temperatures.
"Do you want to know the best part of the car?" asked Mike Mazzeo of New Providence. He and his wife, Diana, owner of the Summit Fireplace Center, displayed their 1930 Model A. He answered his own question courtesy of his car, with a swift and loud "Ooga!" a sound which caused people around the car to slightly jump while simultaneously smiling. The Ooga horn, known back in the day as a Klaxon horn, an invention of an Edison associate, Miller Reese Hutchison, was manufactured in New Jersey beginning in 1908 by the Lovell-McConnell Manufacturing Co. in Newark. The name originated from the Ancient Greek Word klazō which means "to shriek", exactly the sound produced by this Model A.
People were there not only to enjoy the cars but some learned educational facts about the vehicles on display and their accessories. Terry Weaver of Morristown exhibited his 1965 M38A1 Jeep. The M38A1 was a model used during World War II and the Vietnam War. It was one of a number of military vehicles shown during the day. Weaver, who served in the Marines during Vietnam, discussed with Jean-Paul Le of Summit, a member of the U.S. Army, the differences between the military helmets of today and those of yesteryear. Weaver said the helmets back then were multipurpose. "You could use these to cook, heat water and shave," said Weaver. "You can’t do that with the helmets of today." Of the cars and other accompaniments on display Weaver said, "It’s important to keep history alive and to show how things were then, to understand how life is now."
Spectators of all ages seemed to respond positively to the autos, while taking photos and asking questions of their owners. A bevy of trophies, which sparkled under the sunshine in front of the Summit Train Station, were presented later in the afternoon to participants in various categories.
The trophies and overall event were sponsored by a variety of businesses which worked together with Summit Downtown Inc. to make the event possible. Musical entertainment was provided by DJ Stick Shift Eddie, which added further to the ambiance with classic hits. Of the show, Michael Townley of South Plainfield, who displayed his 1937 Chevrolet ½ Ton Master Pickup said, "I like shows the most with the streets closed down. It brings in a lot of spectators and allows the general public the chances to see the show. The show in Summit is one of the best shows around."
