Local Adult School Offers New Lecture Series & More
By The Adult School of the Chathams, Madison and Florham Park
9/6/2009

The Adult School of the Chathams, Madison and Florham Park will offer 50 new classes this fall including a new lecture series. Catalogs have been mailed, the catalog can also be viewed online at www.theadultschool.org or a catalog can be picked up at local libraries.

The new lecture series includes 3 different class offerings which are:

· Ten Moral Moments in the Life of Abraham Lincoln will be held on Wednesday, October 28, 2009 from 7:00PM - 8:30PM in the Chase Room of the Madison Public Library, 39 Keep Street, Madison. As the storm clouds of war gathered around him, Lincoln’s words at his first inaugural address urged his fellow countrymen to listen to "the better angels of our nature" to avoid a civil war. This presentation will show how Abraham Lincoln lived those words and was a powerful example of kindness, dedication to the truth, generosity, empathy, restraint, humility, compassion and resolve. Weaving humorous stories into the lecture, students will enjoy hearing our great president come to life. Historian and lecturer Glenn LeBoeuf will teach this class. The cost is $20.00 per person plus a $10.00 registration fee.

· "The Fabulous Frank Sinatra" will be held on October 13, 2009 from 7:00PM – 8:30PM in the Chase Room of the Madison Public Library, 39 Keep Street, Madison. This class will offer an exciting interactive program on films from Hollywood’s Golden Era focusing on Frank Sinatra, one of the most memorable performers of the 20th century. The class will discuss and see film clips of "From Here to Eternity," "High Society," "On TheTown," "Guys and Dolls," and "Pal Joey." Audience participation is encouraged. Bill Levy, an author and lecturer on vintage films will teach this class. The cost is $20.00 per person plus a $10.00 registration fee.

· Short Stories of John Cheever, a three session class will begin on Friday, September 25, 2009 from 9:30AM – 10:30AM in the Alice Lundt Meeting Room of the Library of the Chathams, 214 Main Street, Chatham. In his short fiction, John Cheever consistently indicates his view that moral focus and personal contentment cannot be provided by outside forces. Human beings must find the resources for such discoveries within themselves. Luckily, many can, but others are either limited by their lack of imagination or their spiritual alienation. The class will explore these ideas in three stores: "O Youth and Beauty," "The Trouble of Marcie Flint," and "The Housebreaker of Shady Hill." To obtain copies of the stories call the Adult School office at 973-443-9222. The class is being taught by Laura Gabrielsen, a professor at County College of Morris. The cost is $60.00 per person plus a $10.00 registration fee.

Other new classes this fall include learning to speak German or Japanese, classes on wine and cheese, social networking, handbag design, millinery, glass or clock painting, daytime painting, scrapbooking, antiques, fresh wreath or centerpiece and more! Register for more than one class at the same time and pay only one $10.00 registration fee.

The Adult School, founded in 1937, is an independent, non-profit organization providing a comprehensive range or learning experiences for people of all ages. The school is not funded by government or local school districts, and welcomes students of any race and of any national or ethnic origin. Office staff can be reached by calling 973-443-9222.
