Expert-led tours of the Regional Biocontainment Laboratory, the Mammography in Motion mobile unit, and the Emergency Department at UMDNJ-The University Hospital were among the highlights for lawmakers from New Jersey and nearby states who participated in the "Legislators in the Lab" program held on August 19-21 at UMDNJ.
The program is sponsored by the National Conference of State Legislatures (NCSL) and designed to let leaders in the health field share their expertise with state legislators who have a strong interest in health care policy.
The event at UMDNJ was an initiative of the University’s Department of Government and Community Affairs and coordinated among the department, the UMDNJ-New Jersey Medical School and the NCSL. It was one of nine "Legislators in the Lab" programs scheduled to be held this year by NCSL in various locations throughout the United States.
Deputy Speaker of the New Jersey Assembly, Upendra J. Chivukula (D-Somerset/Middlesex), hosted the UMDNJ event. Also in attendance for the program were New Jersey Assembly members John McKeon (D-Essex), Cleopatra Tucker (D-Essex) and L. Grace Spencer (D-Essex). They were joined by Natalie Collins, senior policy advisor with the Assembly Republican Office, and Patrick Gillespie, deputy executive director for the New Jersey Legislature Senate Democratic Office. Participating out-of-state legislators included Rep. Kevin Ryan (D-Montville, Connecticut); Rep. James J. Campbell, Sr., (R-Newfield, Maine); Sen. Daniel Foster (D-Kanawha, West Virginia); and Rep. Elizabeth Ritter (D-Cheshire, Connecticut). AstraZeneca’s Drake Nakaishi, director of state government affairs, and Ayad Mudarris, regional scientific manager, also attended.
Interaction with S.H.A.R.E. (Student Health Advocacy for Resources and Education) leaders and a compelling lecture by fourth-year medical students to an impressive turnout of incoming first years about the Student Family Health Care Center were among the highlights cited by lawmakers at the end of the program. They also lauded the Clinical Skills Center at the medical school, the Cardiac Catheterization Laboratory and STAT-MI at UMDNJ-University Hospital and Orthopaedics in the Ambulatory Care Center. In surveys completed at the end of the program, all participants reported an increase in their knowledge, with one lawmaker remarking that this program was the best he had seen in his seven years as a Representative.
The University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey (UMDNJ) is the nation’s largest free-standing public health sciences university with more than 5,700 students attending the state’s three medical schools, its only dental school, a graduate school of biomedical sciences, a school of health related professions, a school of nursing and a school of public health on five campuses. Annually, there are more than two million patient visits at UMDNJ facilities and faculty practices at campuses in Newark, New Brunswick/Piscataway, Scotch Plains, Camden and Stratford. UMDNJ operates University Hospital, a Level I Trauma Center in Newark, and University Behavioral HealthCare, a statewide mental health and addiction services network.
