SUMMIT, NJ - Before heading back to work in Washington, D.C., Congressman Leonard Lance, R-7, made a stop in Summit for a tour of one of the area’s most comprehensive senior service centers.
Lance visited SAGE Eldercare on Tuesday morning to take a tour of the building, learn more about the services SAGE provides and help with the Meals on Wheels program. The visit was at the request of SAGE employees, who want Lance to keep the senior population in mind when he goes back to the nation’s capitol.
With a sour economy, SAGE’s Executive Director, Jessica Rosenzweig, said more than ever, seniors need outside help. "We’re really the only adult daycare in the community. We’ve seen a tremendous increase in need for meals in the community," Rosenzweig said. "There’s a tremendous need to continue," she added.
Lance, who has ties to Summit and the area, said he understands the need and was impressed with all that SAGE has to offer, which includes adult daycare, home visits and recreation for the area’s older population. The Congressman said that his family has been involved for decades with the Meals on Wheels program, so it was second nature for him to stop by homes to deliver meals this week. "It’s wonderful interaction [and provides] nutritional value," he said.
The Congressman also found that SAGE’s popular furniture shop, which repairs and refurbishes people’s worn down tables and chairs, is another part of the facility he was not previously aware of, but was happy to discover. "I think I might take advantage of this," Lance said, pointing out that he has some furniture at home that needs help.
"This adult daycare, I think, is essential and critical," Rosenzweig said. "There needs to be a lot more attention."
