New Jersey Intergenerational Orchestra to Perform Free Spring Concert on March 14; Mariko Takashima, Winner of Baroque Concerto Competition, Guest Violinist
By Len Avdey
3/10/2009

The New Jersey Intergenerational Orchestra (NJIO) will hold its free Spring Concert on Saturday, March 14, at 7:30 p.m. at Summit High School, 125 Kent Place Boulevard, in Summit, New Jersey. A pre-concert talk begins at 6:45 p.m. Guest violinist will be Mariko Takashima of Englewood, New Jersey, winner of NJIO’s Baroque Concerto Competition.

Takashima, 16, has been studying violin for eight years and has been a student of Naoko Tanaka and Zoran Jakovcic. She was the 2006 winner of the Mannes Music School Pre-college’s Symphony Orchestra’s Concerto Competition. She was selected as concertmistress of the Young Artist Orchestra of Boston University’s Tanglewood Institute in 2007 and served as assistant concertmaster of the New York Youth Symphony from 2007-2008. Currently, she attends the Keio Academy of New York. The New Jersey Intergenerational Orchestra "Bridges the Generations through Music" by providing orchestral education to musicians of all ages and skill levels.

NJIO has an orchestra for two playing levels: Nouveau String Orchestra for string players who read music and have less than two years experience, and the Full Symphony Orchestra for more advanced musicians.

The Spring Concert will feature the Symphony Orchestra performing Beethoven’s Ruins of Athens Overture, Ravel’s Pavane Pour Une Infante Défunte, Bizet’s L’Arléssiene Suite #2 and Bartok’s Romanian Folk Dances. The Nouveau String Orchestra will play: Vivaldi’s Allegro, Beethoven’s Allegretto and Nunez’ Little Symphony.

This season NJIO is "Celebrating 15 Years of Ageless Music." NJIO’s 15th Anniversary Concert will be held on Sunday, May 3 at 3 p.m. at the Union County Performing Arts Center in Rahway, New Jersey. Featured performers will be internationally acclaimed cellist Andre Emelianoff and the award-winning young artist and cellist Hyewon Kim. Tickets for the 15th Anniversary Concert are $15. There is no charge for children and seniors (62+). A "Meet the Artists" post-concert reception will be $25 per adult or senior, with no charge for children.

NJIO was formed in 1994 to allow musicians of all ages and abilities the opportunity to experience the joy of making music together. Through its mentoring program NJIO enables developing musicians to interact with and learn from more experienced players in a friendly, non-competitive environment. NJIO performs several times a year in Union County venues and travels to locations such as Lincoln Center Fountain Plaza, the United Nations in New York, and Washington, D.C. for special performances.

Funding has been made possible in part by the Frank and Lydia Bergen Foundation, the Lillian P. Schenck Fund and Tokio Marine Management.

Summit High School is handicap accessible; large print programs will be available.

For more information on upcoming events, visit the NJIO Web site (www.njio.org) or contact Elizabeth Nowik at info@njio.org or at 908-522-0100.
