National Stop On Red Week Observed August 1-7: New Jersey Drivers Reminded to Stop on Red and Drive Safely Toward a Safer Community
By National Stop on Red Week
7/26/2010

New Jersey drivers and residents are urged to take a stand against red-light running and promote safe driving habits during National Stop on Red Week 2010, which runs August 1-7. Sponsored by the Federal Highway Administration, National Stop on Red Week is dedicated to educating Americans about the dangers of running red lights and aims to reduce the number and severity of traffic citations and crashes.

Red-light running is the cause of more than 180,000 vehicle crashes each year, resulting in more than 1,000 deaths and 90,000 injuries. The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety found that motorists are more likely to be injured in urban crashes involving red light running than in other types of urban crashes. Half of crash deaths attributed to red light running involve pedestrians and occupants in vehicles struck by red light runners. Surprisingly, the United States Department of Transportation discovered that one in three Americans know someone who has been injured or even killed in a red-light running crash.

Many communities in New Jersey have already implemented a road safety program to improve traffic safety in the community.

As the program vendor for many of the communities in New Jersey that have implemented intersection safety cameras, American Traffic Solutions (ATS) would like to remind drivers how to safely approach an intersection.

Drivers should always slow down and prepare to make a complete stop when a light turns yellow. Yellow lights provide drivers instruction to prepare for a change in traffic flow. Always yield to pedestrians as they have the right of way and always come to a full and complete stop before turning right on red. It’s the law. Make sure the roadway is clear before proceeding and work with us to improve traffic safety in our community.

Safety is the responsibility of every driver, not just during Stop on Red Week, but every day and every time someone gets behind the wheel of a vehicle. Intersection safety is an important aspect of safety in our community for all motorists.
