CHATHAM BOROUGH, NJ - Despite the 93-degree temperatures, families found fun and relief at the Chatham Borough Farmers Market on Saturday.
Janice Piccolo, market manager of the Chatham Borough-sponsored Farmers Market, said there are 21 vendors which rotate in and out over the season. "We have the most farmers in the area, from fruit and vegetable farmers, to seafood and organic meat producers, to beekeepers. We also have local artisans offering food and nonfood items," she said.
The featured event this Saturday was presented by registered dietitian Erica Ohrn of Chatham, who offered samples of a nutritional snack: fresh Jersey tomatoes, mozzarella, arugula and olive oil on bread. "Arugula replaces the usual basil. We want to introduce the health benefits of arugula, eat within the season and broaden the palate," she said.
Chatham Borough Mayor Nelson Vaughan manned the booth for the Mayors’ Healthy Lifestyle Challenge. Mr. Vaughan said Chatham Township has agreed to join the borough in the state’s wellness campaign. The program is run at no cost to the taxpayers. "This is an example of shared services and having Chatham Township join the borough will make the program stronger," he said. He is urging the borough’s employees to take the challenge as it helps on insurance costs. Chatham Patrolman Robert Sweetin, who has been on the force for 22 years, took the challenge. "The goal of the challenge is to have the citizens of the borough and township ‘know your numbers’ and reduce critical health indicators including resting heart rate, body mass index, blood pressure, waist circumference and cholesterol," the mayor said.
As for the fare, Phil Burrows of Lew Demeter’s Chatham Bakery and Bread Shoppe, said a hot seller Saturday were their crumb buns.
Theresa Marotta of Chatham and her sister-in-law Rosemary started the Savory Garden to accommodate the vegetarians in their family. "Unimpressed with the selections for healthy nonmeat alternatives, we sought to fill the void with wholesome, flavorful foods," they said. Their veggie burgers aim to entice the heartiest meat eaters.
Tim and Cory Hayes were in charge of Supper’s booth, offering samples of corn bread, butternut squash soup and gemilli pasta in sundried tomato sauce. The Chatham family-style restaurant is run by their mother, Karen Hayes.
Tracee Palmer of Secret Garden Soap of Madison offered soap made of raw goat’s milk. She keeps three goats on her property as well as bees and chickens. Her husband designed the mold for the soap, which is made in small batches only. "You can purchase the soap at my house and meet the goats and even feed the two babies. We bottle feed them to keep them gentle," she said.
Next week’s feature is a baked goods contest. Any baked good, with the exception of pies, is eligible. Entries must include at least one of the following summer fruits: blackberries, blueberries, nectarines, peaches, plums and/or raspberries.
The market runs every Saturday, from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m., from June 26 to November 20, at the Chatham Borough train station parking lot. For more information visit the market’s website at www.chathamboroughfarmersmarket.org
