CHATHAM TOWNSHIP, NJ - On Thursday night, the Chatham Township Board of Adjustment continued its hearing into proposed additions for Chatham Day School that include requests for a steep slope and conditional use variance. Chatham Day School was represented by witness Dr. Pamela Fiander, the head of the school, and her attorney.
Fiander detailed a two-phase construction process that would add a gymnasium, cafeteria, library and kitchen to the school. The improvement of facilities would have a positive result for the school, according to Fiander.
"We looked for how we could bring the community together as a whole," Fiander said.
One of the reasons for the additions was the fact that currently, Chatham Day School, located in an estate house, runs its gymnasium, cafeteria and auditorium in a dining room on the premises that contains both a chandelier and fireplace.
Another result of the construction would be an increase in the number of parking spots on premises from 67 to 125. The additional parking would help alleviate parking congestion during larger events at the school.
"We don’t need it, but we could use it," Fiander said. "Currently, we can’t hold one back to school night. We have to stagger it."
Several residents of Chatham who live near the school raised concerns about the proposal. Among the issues they raised were the environmental impact of the proposed changes, whether the number of nighttime events at the school could be limited, and how the private school would best co-exist with the Township of Chatham.
The hearing will be carried over until the next meeting on August 19th.
Also at the meeting on Thursday night, the Board approved Shop Rite’s request to add three more sprockets outside of the building to be able to water flowers on its property. Shop Rite’s request included permission for waterpiping on the inside of the building, as well.
