As Lutheran Social Ministries of New Jersey continues meeting with the Zoning Board of Adjustment of New Providence, N.J., to obtain variances for its planned development of the Crossing at Murray Hill continuing care retirement community (CCRC), area residents are talking about the benefits of having such a community in New Providence.
"I lived in New Providence for 43 years," said 77-year-old Pat Brown of Bedminster. "It’s such a lovely town – great schools, a community pool and tennis courts, a variety of churches that are well-attended, good shopping and restaurants galore."
From 1959 until 2002, Brown noted, her family and her friends and neighbors helped "build" New Providence through bond issues that provided the amenities and services the area now enjoys. "When I sold my house in 2002, I had to move out of the area because I couldn’t find a suitable place to live. Some of my friends who were long-time residents of New Providence like me would jump at the chance to move to a community like the Crossing at Murray Hill. I would love to be able to call New Providence ‘home’ again."
Eleanor Pappky, also 77 years old, has investigated a number of senior living communities, and thinks the CCRC proposed for 535 Mountain Avenue would be a wonderful place to live. "Over the years, I’ve driven a number of senior women to tour CCRCs in New Jersey and Pennsylvania. I’ve probably seen 10-15 different communities, but the nicest one I saw was the Crane’s Mill community in West Caldwell, which is run by Lutheran Social Ministries. They have so many activities; so much to do. And I like the idea of being in a community where you can move from independent living to assisted living if you need to."
Like Brown, being near familiar shops, doctors and other services is important to Pappky. She also wants to be near people she knows. "My husband passed away in 2005, and I have no children, nieces or nephews. But, I have a lot of good friends I’d like to stay near to. New Providence would certainly benefit from having a CCRC in the community."
At 40, Pam Marusic is far from retirement age. But, with a master’s degree in gerontology and experience as a nursing home administrator, the New Providence resident believes CCRCs are "the future of senior housing options." Marusic said, "CCRCs provide for continuity in seniors’ lives, enabling them to remain in one community even as their needs change. And, the social opportunities these communities provide – a community-type dining room, common areas, recreation facilities, planned programs – are just what many seniors want and need.
"New Providence is a wonderful, family-oriented community," according to Marusic. "A CCRC would help ensure that those family-oriented benefits extended to our senior residents, too. It would be a win/win for seniors and New Providence."
