Clever Commute is a service that enables commuters to share real-time transit alerts and updates by using their mobile messaging devices. The brainchild of Josh Crandall, who has been regularly commuting from his home in New Jersey to New York for years, the free service now has about 5,000 subscribers and is growing every day.
In January of 2006, Mr. Crandall was waiting for a train home and saw his fellow travelers reading their Blackberries as they too were waiting for the train. He says, "It dawned on me that we were a loosely-joined community…and that we could actually be of help to each other." Clever Commute was born.
Clever Commute does not try to replace the alert systems that are provided by several transit providers. Rather, Clever Commute provides a vehicle for members of a "commuting community" to alert and assist each other in navigating transit issues and problems that arise.
How does it work? First, users sign up at the Clever Commute website, www.clevercommute.com. Next, they identify themselves as riders of particular train/bus lines. Then, they provide an e-mail address that they can use to communicate with all the other Clever Commuters on their line. When riders learn of issues during their commute, they can send a short real-time note to their fellow travelers regarding the problems they are witnessing.
Since it began in 2006, Clever Commute has expanded to include New Jersey Transit (all trains and several bus lines), Metro North, LIRR and several buses, ferries and light rail lines. It is also now fully "live" in Boston, and in various stages of deployment in Chicago, Baltimore/DC, San Francisco, Portland, Los Angeles and London.
Mr. Crandall told The Alternative Press, "This started as a handshake agreement with a few commuting buddies...and it has grown into something that is now part of the fabric of the daily commute."
You can sign up for this free service at www.clevercommute.com.
