On Monday, Martin Luther King Day, local resident, Danielle Speckhart, conducted a reading of her children’s book about volunteerism, The Littlest Volunteers, at the Cora Hartshorn Arboretum. The event was run by both The Junior League of the Oranges and Short Hills and the Arboretum. There was a morning and afternoon reading, as well as a volunteer event.
While author Danielle Speckhart has conducted many readings in the North Jersey area during the past months of The Littlest Volunteers, what made these readings particularly special on Monday, Martin Luther King Day, was that after reading the book aloud about children volunteering, the children present were encouraged to build a small but unique present for less fortunate children at two local foster care centers to help cheer them up. Each child that attended Monday’s readings was supplied with a plain, small, clay pot and was helped as they painted and decorated the pots and then added potting soil and planted living green plants.
The Littlest Volunteers is dedicated to children who have a big heart and to inspire all of us to help better our communities. The book was supported by Danielle’s local non-profit volunteer organization, The Junior League of the Oranges and Short Hills. Aside from the book being sold in New Jersey and on Amazon, with proceeds going to help those in need, it is also being used in the curriculum for all second graders in Millburn Township (voted the best school system in the State of NJ in 2008).
Like the character Annie in the book, when read at the schools, the students are guided by educators and volunteers to have the opportunity to create and implement their own age-appropriate community projects and learn through a variety of methods the rewards of becoming life-long volunteers. There is also a website to give out information about the book and its teachings. It is not often, if ever, that there has been a book for the youngest generation that not only teaches literacy but also volunteerism. That website is: www.LittlestVolunteers.org. Once there, you can click onto actress Raven Symone, who volunteered to do the reading on the website.
